Safety Tips for Las Vegas BikeFest

If you are a hardcore biker, no doubt you will be attending the annual Las Vegas BikeFest in October. Not only will you get to experience awesome motorcycles, but also music, body art, contests and much more. The energy and passion at the rally are exciting for newcomers and veterans alike.

However, just like with any major event, your chances of getting into an accident increase with the influx of traffic, out-of-state drivers and detours. Even a freak accident can occur, as it did in 2016 at the Sturgis rally in South Dakota. Have a safe weekend by following these tips for avoiding a motorcycle crash:

Increase your visibility

Passenger-car drivers are notorious for not seeing bikers. While you cannot control the vision of others, you can make it harder for them not to notice you. Wear bright colors and use reflective tape on your gear and bike. Even then, do not assume other motorists can see you, so exercise caution.

Wear protective gear

Now is your chance to show off your cool biker jacket and accessories. They not only serve as expressions of fashion, but also as protection against sunburns, road rash and wind. Remember your helmet, too, as it is Nevada law to wear one while riding a motorcycle, whether as an operator or a passenger.

Follow traffic laws

This may seem like a no-brainer, but most drivers of all vehicle types break traffic laws on a regular basis. Speeding is perhaps the one most people are guilty of. Become familiar with Nevada state laws if you are from out of town. For example, lane splitting is illegal in Las Vegas.

Be prepared

Before hitting the road, inspect your motorcycle for issues big and small. Even something as minor as a broken tail light can affect your safety or land you a ticket. Whether you are a new biker or a skilled one, you may benefit from a safety course that addresses how to maneuver your bike in certain situations to prevent a collision.
