The invention of the airbag can be traced back to 1951 when the first patent was registered. In the early 1970s, Ford and General Motors began offering vehicles equipped with airbags. Although not a replacement for the seatbelt, the airbag provides an energy absorbing surface between you, your passengers and the steering wheel, front dashboards or side windows helping prevent severe energy.
One of the largest recall in the history surrounds defective Takata airbags found in millions of vehicles sold by many of the vehicle manufacturers including Honda, BMW, Chrysler, Ford, General Motors, Toyota. The defect results in shrapnel like metal shards and other components being propelled throughout the vehicle interior. This frequently results in lacerations but can also result in blunt force trauma that causes injury or even death. There have been more than 100 injuries and eight deaths linked to these airbags.
