Hip Replacements

Due to increasing patient complaints, the FDA has ordered a review of all metal-on-metal hip implants. Traditionally, hip implants were made with ceramic or plastic parts, but all metal parts were intended to be more durable and last longer. However, these metal-on-metal implants ended up failing at a higher than expected rate. While most implants last 20 years or more, these implants were failing in as little as five years. The surgeries are more invasive than typical hip replacement surgeries.

Defects

Problems with the hip replacements:

  • Loosening
  • Metallosis (tissue or bone death)
  • Fracturing of the device
  • Corrosion of the device
  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Problems walking

Many patients require revision surgeries and suffer from significant post-revision complications. Some of these hip replacements have not yet been official “recalled.”
